"This year, we’re bringing together 100 rings by 100 Goldsmiths’ Fair exhibitors from recent years. For thousands of years rings have been used to celebrate and commemorate important and meaningful moments in peoples lives. Our 100 ring makers have blended craftsmanship and engineering to create tiny sculptures and works of art..." - Goldsmiths' Fair

DEEP-SEA URCHIN RING
For '100 Rings' I proposed a dramatic new piece - titled 'Deep-Sea Urchin Ring'. I wanted the finished ring to feel sculptural in form and evoke the velvet darkness of the deep seas. The design brings compelling contrast and depth through combined precious metals. Silver sea urchin spines are oxidised and set with a deep blue cushion cut topaz - juxtaposed with rich 18ct yellow gold granulation.

The new ring is part of a series of explorations within my 'Sea Treasures' collection - taking inspiration from sea and reef urchins. I've always marvelled at these ethereal creatures and their varying linear forms and exquisite patterned shells. The myriad of species span a spectrum of colours - both open water sea urchins and reef dwellers. Alongside delicate tones and vibrant hues are the otherworldly deep black-blues - which were the starting point for this new piece.
